Blog Post : Who You Are
Hello, My name is Connor Bobis and I am from Ventura, CA. I came from a small California beach town but I am headed to a large urban area like San Francisco even though I have never been to the bay before. My plan to get there is to work in a few banking and finance-related jobs in order to get the valuation experience I need to end up on the venture capital side later in my career.
I am like my parents in the sense that I have a strong work ethic and the resilience needed to thrive despite the environment. With this being said, I am unlike my parents with my unmatched curiosity about how the world has come to be and question why we accept the things that we accept to be true.
Recently, I have made the switch to operate under my own expectations rather than other people’s expectations for myself. This is more complicated in my family situation where I was raised by a single mother and the eldest of two brothers, but I have fully made the transition to work under my expectations and prioritize my own goals as well as my interests.
I had a professor here at USC, Ben Van de Bunt, who taught a social entrepreneurship course (BAEP 460) and inspired me. He made his living by working in finance and working in law, but then met his wife and started investing in a series of business ventures that provided good for society. For example, he was part of a company that bought real estate and rented out rooms to disabled adults that needed to move out of their parent’s homes while still having the supervision of a caregiver. Upon learning this, I was now aware that not only can you have good investments that generate excellent returns, but you can also make investments that are impactful at the same time as making money.
The wild animal that I connect with is a Moose, because I think I appear to be very calm in the wild but when people get closer then they can see more into my passion and strong opinions. In terms of the Nature Kingdom, there was a large tree in my front yard as a kid that I always had plans to climb once I got older since I had strict parents, but a few years into elementary school, there was a bad storm that cracked the tree down the middle due to the high winds which caused my parents to cut the tree down to protect from the tree falling on our house in the next storm. I still think about that tree from time to time, she is truly the one who got away.

ReplyDeleteHey Connor, I had a similar experience with operating under my own expectations. It was an awkward adjustment, but as I have committed to working under my own standards, I have felt a lot better about myself and I hope that you are feeling the same!
